After a very long wait, plans to build a new classroom block at Opihi College are finally progressing!
Councillor Paddy O’Reilly and iwi representative, Hami Te Rahui, were part of a ceremony held in February 2020 to symbolically turn the first sod ready for construction. The classroom known as Te Kainga (or, as some past students may remember it, the Drama Suite or AV Theatre) has been demolished earlier this year.
The space created (along with the already demolished H-Block) will be covered with the new classroom block. The large building will be single storied and contain classrooms, science labs and a Whare, and is estimated to cost $5 million dollars to construct.
It is hoped the building will be ready for use in 2021.
